Staff Scientist II – Education & Commercial

As a part of EH&E’s Education & Commercial team, a Staff Scientist II, is responsible for the management, program coordination, and technically sound work products that meet internal and external client expectations, on time and within budget. The Staff Scientist provides technical support in the field at client site assessments, and other related projects with input from the Principal Consultant. The successful applicant will be supported by a team of industry experts who will nurture and develop your career. This position reports directly to the Principal Consultant. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management:

  • Prime project management responsibility for multiple project types, including ensuring projects are delivered within specified budgets and timeframes
  • Proposal development and project scoping
  • Coordinating project staff and data collection
  • Maintaining client satisfaction and ensuring quality measures on projects

Personnel Management:

  • Provides one-on-one coaching and mentoring to junior staff
  • Provides feedback to manager on progress of staff coached, may have informal or dotted-line reporting relationship with Technical Specialists to assist Managing Principal Consultant or Principal Consultant
  • Sales & Client Relations:

    • Develops clients through excellent delivery of projects, while identifying cross-selling services opportunities
    • Identifying potential business leads and relaying the information to the Managing Principal Consultant or Marketing team
    • Deliver services on projects that meet or exceed managers expectations
    • Present a positive, professional image


    • Responsible for all project-related QA/QC and Safety issues
    • Ensures service delivery meets client expectations


    • Provides coaching and mentoring, typically in a one-on-one, project-based format. Provides feedback to Manager on progress of staff coached. Responsible for individual development plan and executes plan within budgetary and time constraints
    • Possess a willingness and openness to professional development

    Customer Satisfaction:

    • Responsible for customer satisfaction on a project basis
    • Develop professional working relationship with client

    Technical Expertise:

    • Broadly applies scientific and engineering principles to EH&Es work, excellent observational and analytical skill, broad experience with EH&E’s work
    • Assist EH&E staff with maintaining environmental health and safety program compliance
    • Conduct environmental assessments, environmental sampling, indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations, laboratory inspections, and OSHA, DEP, MWRA, and EPA compliance activities
    • Assist EH&E staff with risk assessment and job safety analysis for work involving chemical and biological materials
    • Conducting qualitative and quantitative industrial hygiene assessments
    • Develop observational ability based on experience and functional analytical skills in the discipline
    • Read and interpret construction drawings, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports

    Communication & Reports:

    • Craft important emails, memos, letters to clients and be the prime author on technical reports
    • Contribute to marketing efforts effort vis-à-vis technical presentations
    • Confer with scientists and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information
    • Clearly communicate technical concepts and be comfortable with presenting technical information to a wide audience
    • Prepare and provide safety/IH training to client staff within areas of expertise
    • Collect, analyze and report on environmental data, such as building materials, air monitoring, and soil or water samples

    Financial Management:

    • Work within timeframes specified by the Principal Consultant, and if timeframe requirements cannot be met or achieved then provide timely feedback to PM
    • Achieve project profitability goals, including overhead assignments within the specified timeframe
    • Identify and implement, where appropriate, task-specific changes to improve speed and profitability on projects and be responsible for accounts receivables on managed projects
    • Hit individual billing/targets

    Education / Training
    • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or natural/physical sciences or a degree in industrial hygiene. Candidates with an advanced degree would be preferred
    • 2+ years of experience required
    • OSHA (10, 30 & 40), Safety and or Research Compliance preferred
    • CIH, ASP, CSP, CHMM Preferred. Interest and ability in pursuing these professional certifications required
    • Project Management experience
    • MS Suite, proficient

    Travel within Boston and the New England area and limited travel nationally is required; must provide own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license; and must be able to wear a respirator.

    Must demonstrate competency in consulting and advising clients, must be highly organized, confident, self-motivated and able to synthesize data and information quickly and effectively.
