EH&E Analysis Confirms Metro Boston Hospitals Progress in Reducing GHG Emissions Despite Major Disruption in 2020 – 2022

Health Care Without Harm contracted EH&E to conduct an in-depth analyze of energy use data across Metro Boston healthcare facilities to assess progress towards climate goals shared by the City of Boston and Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission (GRC). These goals include reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030, and 100% by 2050.
Despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and energy markets, rising interest rates, and three of the seven highest recorded annual global surface temperatures from 2020 – 2022, the Boston health sector maintained progress in reducing GHG emissions.
EH&E’s analysis examined more than 40,000 energy and emissions records from 2011 through 2022 covering hospitals in metropolitan Boston. The findings reveal that over 11 years these hospitals reduced their emissions by 22%, avoiding almost 700,000 metric tons of emissions – equivalent to the electricity use of 145,000 homes.
The complete findings and trends identified by EH&E’s analysis are detailed in a new report released by Health Care Without Harm on behalf of Boston’s GRC Health Care Working Group.
EH&E is proud to have contributed to this analysis, providing data-driven insights that support continued progress toward a more sustainable healthcare sector. The full report is available for download on the Health Care Without Harm website.
