Massachusetts’ Laura’s Law, An Act Ensuring Safe Patient Access to Emergency Care, is the first written standard of its kind. It sets standards for emergency department signs, lighting, directional marking, communications, and the security monitoring of any major hospital door to ensure that all patients in crisis can access emergency rooms. This law is likely to be incorporated into the Facility Guidelines Institute’s Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals, impacting hospitals nationwide.

This session will share the experience of Saint Vincent Hospital and MetroWest Medical Center (part of the Tenet Healthcare system) to provide insights for hospitals located in and outside of Massachusetts on how to improve wayfinding, communication, and safety on their campus.

Massachusetts hospitals will learn strategies to maintain compliance, training recommendations, and preparation guidance for the required annual review. Hospitals in other regions will understand the requirements that may be on the horizon and can seize the opportunity to begin planning and budgeting for smooth implementation.
