Technical Specialist II – Life Sciences
As a representative of EH&E’s Life Sciences team, a Technical Specialist II will operate in facilities ranging from professional research laboratories to biopharmaceutical companies. Prior experience with Environmental Health and Safety in a laboratory setting is required. Familiarity with EH&S activities including, but not limited to industrial hygiene/indoor environmental quality air monitoring, laboratory inspection, fit testing, chemical/biological hazardous waste management, permitting, and performing risk assessments involving chemical and biological materials is highly desired.
In this role, you will be responsible for the performance and monitoring of all lab safety equipment as well as carrying out PPE fit-testing. Lead and assist in the clean- up of hazardous spills and participate/lead in lab safety training according to federal, state, local government and company guidelines and making sure databases are updated and maintained. Occasional work in outside or wet and humid conditions may be required. The successful applicant will be supported by a team of industry experts who will nurture and develop your career. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Expertise:
- Perform risk assessments involving chemical and biological materials, at the direction of and with guidance from on-site subject matter experts
- Conduct air sampling and personal monitoring for specific materials used in the research environment
- Assist in shipping hazardous materials and biological materials; respond to occasional chemical, biological, and after-hours emergencies
- Assist with incident investigations; maintain hazardous chemical waste program compliance
- Conduct or oversee periodic laboratory safety and biosafety inspections of laboratories by qualified personnel with respect to federal, state, and local government regulations and agencies’ policies. Conduct follow-up with laboratory personnel as needed
Sales & Client Relations:
- Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the business by presenting a positive, professional, respectful, and professional image to our clients
QA/QC:
- Collect quality data following specified quality control procedures and alert project managers on any deviations in procedures
- Verify that equipment is installed and operates as specified and designed
- Inspect and/or test and audit the performance of safety equipment such as but not limited to emergency safety showers and eyewash stations, chemical fume hoods and spill kits; perform respiratory protection fit-testing
- Participate in troubleshooting activities and Laboratory Safety Committee meetings
Training:
- Prepare and deliver laboratory EH&S training programs; provide specific laboratory procedures training; update written materials regarding biological safety and laboratory EH&S (e.g., Biosafety Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Plan, etc.)
Communication and Reports:
- Written and verbal communication skills are essential as you will be contributing to commissioning specific documents that are written and delivered to our clients
- Confer with internal senior staff scientist and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve deviations, and provide technical information
- Collaborate in a small team to investigate problems and maintain databases
Financial Management:
- Be able to work to timelines or allotted hours and report any deviations to this to management
Key Skills

Education / Training
- B.A. or B.S. degree in a related field (biology, microbiology, molecular biology, safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, engineering)
- Experience working in EH&S or a closely related field. Direct work experience in a research laboratory, clinical laboratory, or the biotech industry, whether as an EH&S professional or as a bench scientist preferred
